Event Schedule

  • 11:30 – 12:00: Lunch served
  • 12:00 – 1:15: Speaker
  • 1:15 – 1:30: Q&A
Do you ever wonder why some folks get so worked up about injustice and are ready to take their outrage to the streets? Fear that you are being judged as not doing enough because you work one-on-one with individuals to improve their lives? Wonder why some folks keep trying to create change within broken systems when you want the whole system dismantled and replaced with something that is actually created for all of us to thrive?
You are not alone. Creating long-lasting social change requires that we all bring our gifts, strengths, and power in the ways that make the most sense for us and our communities. There is no one strategy nor one way of doing social justice work that, alone, will bring about the transformation we seek.
“To reach its goal, a movement must include different approaches to change and a great variety of people filling different roles. Each of us prefers some roles over others. And we may play a range of different roles in different circumstances. Understanding our preferences can help us work with others more powerfully.” – Daniel Hunter, Building a Movement to End the New Jim Crow
In this workshop, Alexis Flanagan, will invite us to explore 4 roles in movement building, locate ourselves within those roles and gain understanding about how our approaches and preferences impact and interact with others. By the end of the workshop, participants will have more clarity about how they do/can/want to show up in social justice work while working with others in different roles.
