Lunch and Learn with Heidi Notario

January 24, 2018 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm

YWCA Lancaster is pleased to present a lunch-and-learn event with Heidi Notario: “Living & Working at the Intersections: Responding to Survivors from Diverse Communities.”

YWCA Lunch and Learn
Join Heidi Notario, M.A., for our first Lunch and Learn in 2018 on  January 24.

Survivors of sexual or domestic violence come from every race, ethnicity, and background imaginable. The same can be true of anti-violence advocates. One of the most challenging aspects of supporting  survivors is ensuring the provision of culturally affirming services to all, no matter their backgrounds, while caring for ourselves (advocates, allies, etc.) in the process. In this discussion, we will explore approaches for providing culturally specific services to survivors. We will discuss strategies for making services both culturally relevant and accessible — both sides of the same coin. The presenter will take participants through an intersectional approach on how to properly address each aspect of a survivor’s identity.

The event takes place at YWCA Lancaster, 110 N. Lime St., downtown Lancaster. There is no cost to attend, and lunch will be provided. Space is limited to 50; sign up below to reserve your spot.

Event Schedule

  • 11:30 – 12:00: Lunch served
  • 12:00 – 1:15: Speaker
  • 1:15 – 1:30: Q&A

Heidi Notario, M.A., serves as the director of implementation & social change at the National Latin@ Network for Healthy Families and Communities, a project of Casa de Esperanza. She has advocated for the rights of persons with disabilities and Deaf individuals for more than a decade, working closely at the intersections of disabilities and violence against people of color. Heidi’s interests include a wide variety of issues related to the treatment—by the criminal justice system, service providers, and society at large—afforded to immigrant survivors of violence, those with disabilities, and Deaf individuals. Heidi keeps at the forefront of her anti-oppression work the elimination of barriers that impact survivors with intersecting identities, such as LGBTQ people of color. Heidi views “accessibility” from a human rights framework and is committed to bringing this perspective into her work and personal life. Heidi is originally from Cuba and has resided in the U.S. since 1995. She holds a Master’s degree in Sociology from Lehigh University.
