Week Without Violence – Red Sand Project

October 14 - October 18

YWCA Lancaster is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, stand up for social justice, help families, and strengthen communities. Week Without Violence 2019 is part of a global movement with YWCA’s across the country and around the world to end violence against women and girls. At YWCA, we know that not all violence is acknowledged or responded to equally and that some victims go unrecognized altogether. That’s why, for more than 20 years, YWCA has set aside one week in October as a Week Without Violence, to advocate for awareness of marginalized groups of people who are often targeted by gender-based violence.

Human trafficking, a form of modern-day slavery, is one form of gender-based violence.  Women and girls are specifically targeted by traffickers who then use violence, threats, deception, debt bondage, and other manipulative tactics to trap victims and perpetuate this form of violence.  YWCA Lancaster is using the Red Sand Project to help raise awareness around the vulnerabilities that lead to human trafficking.  Created by Molly Gochman, the Red Sand Project is a public art instillation that promotes awareness of this crime that often occurs in plain sight.  According to Free the Slaves and Walk Free’s Global Slavery Index, there are more than 60,000 people enslaved in the United States today.  However, these marginalized groups are often overlooked and ignored.  The Red Sand Project uses the cracks in our sidewalks to remind us that we cannot merely walk over the most disregarded and vulnerable individuals in our communities.  These people fall through the metaphoric cracks every day and are at most risk for being enslaved.

Our hope is that you will join us to help raise awareness and support of the Red Sand Project by filling a sidewalk crack outside of your building, anytime during the week of October 14 to 18.  We will provide you with the sand kit, and we kindly ask you to do the following:

  1. Fill a sidewalk crack outside your building with red sand;
  2. Snap a photo with your phone or tablet;
  3. Share your photo on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) using the hashtags #RedSandProject, #YWCA, & #WeekWithoutViolence; and tagging YWCA Lancaster: @YWCALancaster. If you don’t have a social media account, please email your picture to bleffler@ywcalancaster.org and we will happily post your image on our own social media page to recognize your partnership.

If you have additional questions, please contact me by emailing bleffler@ywcalancaster.org or call 717-869-5012.  YWCA Lancaster looks forward to partnering with you!
