Virtual Town Hall: SDOL Renaming
January 13 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
On January 13, we are partnering with the School District of Lancaster to host a Virtual Town Hall Meeting regarding the naming of two School District of Lancaster Schools.
Background: On July 21, the SDoL Board of Directors directed the Superintendent to develop a team and a process to review school names per Policy 701. Based on historical information and the desire to provide our students with models that demonstrate our values and honors our diverse community, the Board made the decision to engage in the name change process this year.
Currently: The School District of Lancaster is accepting nominations to rename two of its schools: Southeast (formerly Hand) Middle School and Buchanan Elementary School, which is being replaced with a new building under construction.
YWCA Lancaster’s Center for Race and Gender Equity is listening, learning and leading and supports the School District of Lancaster and we advocate for an equitable community. We will seek to better understand how systemic problems show up in our local community and the history that led to these realities. We will act and coordinate the community work necessary in order to lead change.
On January 13, this Virtual Town Hall Meeting is an opportunity to ask questions and hear from the School District of Lancaster regarding the nomination process.
