An Invitation to the Witness Stones Event at YWCA Lancaster

We warmly invite you to join us for a meaningful and reflective community gathering as we honor the life and memory of Hannah, an enslaved woman whose story is an essential part of Lancaster’s history. This event is part of the Witness Stones Project, a public history initiative that commemorates enslaved individuals through engraved brass markers, restoring visibility, dignity, and truth to lives once erased or minimized.

Lancaster’s history includes enslavement well into the late 1700s and early 1800s. Through this ceremony, we come together to confront this history with honesty and ensure these lives are never forgotten.  We will install a Witness Stone honoring Hannah, who was enslaved on the grounds of what is now the YWCA Lancaster, making her story a permanent and visible part of our shared public memory.  This work reflects the power of education and remembrance, grounded in research and community collaboration, and amplifies the need to continue our mission, eliminating racism and empowering women.

Together, we honor Hannah and reaffirm our responsibility to tell the full story of our shared past.  Thank you for joining us in remembrance and purpose.
