Investing in Our Future: The Power of Pre-K Education in Lancaster
On March 6, 2025, PA State Representative Nikki Rivera hosted a public policy hearing to explore the impact of pre-K programming in Lancaster. Education experts, stakeholders, and advocates gathered to discuss how high-quality early education influences children’s long-term academic success. Among the speakers was YWCA Lancaster’s Senior Director of Child Enrichment, Christelle Thaw-Bolton, who shared the powerful ways PA Pre-K Counts is transforming the lives of children and families in our community.
The Importance of Early Education
At YWCA Lancaster, we have always believed in the transformative power of early care and education. Research consistently shows that children who attend high-quality pre-K programs develop stronger cognitive, social, and emotional skills—giving them a stronger foundation for success in K-12 education and beyond. Since 2007, our partnership with PA Pre-K Counts has allowed us to provide these critical opportunities to Lancaster’s youngest learners, particularly those from families facing economic challenges.
One Story, Countless Possibilities
During the hearing, we shared a story that embodies the impact of pre-K education:
Jack, a three-year-old from Lancaster, entered our Pre-K Counts program under challenging circumstances. His mother, a single parent struggling financially, recognized the value of a structured, nurturing environment for her son but needed support to make it possible.
When Jack first joined us, he faced developmental and social challenges. However, through the resources and structure provided by PA Pre-K Counts, we were able to give him the tools he needed to grow.
Over two years, Jack blossomed—developing communication skills, self-confidence, and a love for learning. He also had access to nutritious meals, a caring environment, and a community that supported his development.
Today, Jack is thriving—not just in school but at home. His early education experience empowered him and his family, proving once again that high-quality pre-K is more than just education—it’s a lifeline.
Why Pre-K Funding Matters
Jack’s story is just one example of how pre-K funding directly benefits children, families, and communities. PA Pre-K Counts funding ensures that children in need have access to the same early education opportunities as their peers, breaking cycles of poverty and giving all children the chance to reach their full potential.
However, there is still work to be done. Not all families in Lancaster have access to affordable, high-quality pre-K programming, and continued investment in early education is essential.
A Call to Action: Investing in Every Child’s Future
As we look ahead, YWCA Lancaster remains steadfast in our commitment to ensuring that every child—regardless of background—has access to early learning opportunities that set them up for lifelong success.
We urge policymakers, educators, and community members to continue advocating for pre-K funding and access.
Creating Change, Together
By working together, we can ensure that stories like Jack’s become the norm, not the exception.
